doha 2014FURTHER FLURRY OF RECORDS SET IN DOHA AT 12TH FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

-    Manaudou sets the standard in 50m freestyle
-    Double World Record glory for Hosszu

Doha – 5th December, 2014: Records continue to be crushed in Doha as the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships passes the halfway mark. Crowds in the stands – and hundreds of millions of sports fans the world over watching Qatar’s showpiece event – have been treated to an incredible five further record-breaking performances at Hamad Aquatic Centre on day three of the championships.

The stands really came alive as the finalists in the event’s showpiece race, the men’s 50m freestyle, lined up on the blocks ready to contest the unofficial ‘fastest man in water’ title.  Florent Manaudou of France did not disappoint and edged the 50m freestyle World Record that bit closer to the 19-second barrier posting a new time of 20.26. He said:

“My main objective was to race and to win - the world record is the cherry on top. It is my first big title since the Olympics in 2012 so it is very special.”

Momentum for the Iron Lady, Katinka Hosszu. has built steadily over the course of the last three days. After only managing silvers on day one, she came back on day two to take a World Record and managed an unbelievable two further World Records to the delight of capacity crowds on day three, in the 200m backstroke and the 100m individual medley. Speaking after her second World Record of the day, she said:

“I felt the first day nothing was happening but I stayed focused and today, everything clicked and I was able to win two World Records.”

“I come here to race but there is a lot of expectation on me. If I came here and won them all then I would get bored so the competition is good, it motivates me.”

Her main competition this meet has come in the form of Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia who continued her gold rush on day three, setting a Championship Record in the 400m freestyle.

In the relays, the Danish team took almost two seconds off the Women’s 4x50m Medley world record to set a new time of 1:44.04 and open the night’s action, whilst the Netherlands closed day three with another world record in the Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay.

Following the Japan-USA 400m Individual Medley showdown on day two of the competition, which played out in favour of Japan who took gold and silver, the Japanese continued to show their dominance in the medleys. This time Kosuke Hagino took gold with Daiya Seto in the bronze medal position, leaving USA’s Ryan Lochte in second.

With 11 World Records in three days and countless Championship Records set in Doha already, the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships is playing out in spectacular fashion in the capital, creating electric atmospheres and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to witness historic sporting moments.
